Cholesterol Lowering Drugs -- Not the Whole Answer

Americans spend more money on cholesterol lowering drugs -- known as statins -- than any other kind of medicine and the market is growing with the aggressive marketing approach initiated by drug companies.

These drugs are not the only way to lower cholesterol. Moreover, a close look at the long list of side-effects of statin drugs quickly indicates that they are certainly not the best alternative.

On May 3, 2003 Executive Office of the President published the following statement:

“Health researchers have found that Americans can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease with a modest change in their diets. The government should make this life-saving information as widely available as possible.”

The White House’s initiative was prompted by new guidelines published by the American Heart Association recommending the consumption of cold-water fish at least twice a week and other oils and food sources high in omega-3 fatty acids.

The statement went an important step further:
“…the growing body of scientific evidence, both experimental and epidemiological, that suggests that consumption of trans fatty acids increases the risk of coronary heart disease.”

In response, the FDA has taken unprecedented action shedding light on what is perceived as a serious health threat. It has announced that products containing trans fatty acids require stringent nutritional labeling starting in 2006.

This is remarkable good news for health enthusiasts and is making healthy choices much more available.

Health studies overwhelmingly support Increasing healthy Omega 3s in the diet

  • Approximately 300,000 of the annual heart attack fatalities are of the “sudden death” variety. The omega-3 fatty acids are particularly protective against these “sudden death” heart attacks.
  • Studies show that as few as two fish meals a week reduce heart attack risk by half.
  • The American Heart Association recently published a study of 11,323 heart attack patients showing that those who took a 1000 mg. fish oil supplement every day were 45% less likely to be dead at the end of 3.5 years
  • High consumption of fish - two to four servings per week - can substantially reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and mortality among people with type 2 diabetes.

Getting more exercise, reducing saturated fats and trans fats, reducing the calories in the diet, increasing Omega 3s and getting plenty of fiber all reduce cholesterol and support a healthy cardiovascular system. Add them all up, and the cholesterol-lowering effect is similar to that seen with statin drugs -- without the side effects or high cost.
