How to Chill Out. . .Natural Answers for Hot Flashes

It is estimated that in the year 2000, 31 million women in the United States reached menopause.Hot flashes are a hallmark symptom and experts say that 85 percent of women will experience these personal heat waves.

A flash can last from seconds to 30 minutes and is accompanied by increased heart rate, shallow breathing and sweating. A chill and exhaustion usually follow.

For years, the answer to hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause (foggy thinking, night sweats, depression. etc.) has been estrogen replacement therapy (HRT). Experience has shown that there is no guarantee of relief from synthetic estrogen, plus newer research has confirmed that these estrogen alternatives create their own set of health problems, including an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

A new study published in the Alternative Medicine Review, Vol. 8:3, 2003, compared pharmacological treatment options with botanical treatments. The good news is that there is a broad spectrum of natural alternatives that have proven to be extremely effective. Two that are easy to include in your diet and rank high in their effectiveness are:

  • Phytoestrogens rich in isoflavones. These phytonutrients are derived primarily from dietary lignins (flaxseed and whole grain cereals) and white legumes (soybeans and chick-peas) and are particularly effective in reducing the frequency, duration and/or severity of hot flashes. In addition, they protect against both cancer and cardiovascular disease.
  • Vitamin E at daily doses of 50 to 400 IU was shown to effectively decrease hot flashes and other menopausal complaints when compared to placebo. Vitamin E supplementation was also shown to reduce other common symptoms of menopause, including fatigue, dizziness, palpitations and nervousness.

To manage hormonal balance throughout life. . .and avoid hot flashes. . .follow a sensible diet high in essential fatty acids, lean protein, complex carbohydrates (high fiber) and a generous helping of phytoestrogens and vitamin E.

New Spirit has a great collection of extraordinary phytoestrogenic products to complement all phases of a women’s life. A great place to begin is with the Wellness Pack PLUS NutriFem and PhytoSoy Tea Concentrate.

Not all hot flashes can be blamed on hormone changes.
Food allergies (monosodium glutamate, sodium nitrate and sulfites), spicy foods, prescription drugs (calcium channel blockers & SSRIs including Prozac) and emotional distress can all produce the discomfort associated with hot flashes. Carbonated and caffeinated drinks can also negatively effect metabolism and contribute to hot flashes.
