BLOOD PRESSURE. . . WHAT IS NORMAL?

New federal guidelines have been published that identify systolic/diastolic blood pressure readings of 120/80 to 139/89 as “prehypertensive.” Previously individuals whose resting blood pressure fell within these limits were considered to be at low risk of later death from heart disease. The implication of these new guidelines is that damage to your arteries increases at levels as low as 115/75.

What do these numbers mean?
The rate at which blood moves throughout the body can put additional stress on the heart. . .and the artery walls. Changes in blood pressure are an important adaptive mechanism we depend on daily.

  • When you stand up, your systolic blood pressure increases by an average of 10 points.
  • Cardiovascular exercise programs are designed to increase the heart rate and, thereby the blood pressure.
  • White Coat Syndrome is a phenomena whereby blood pressure increases simply from the anxiety of having your doctor take your blood pressure.

It is not abnormal for a healthy person’s blood pressure to vary throughout the day, responding to our unique environment. Consistently high resting blood pressure, however, is a matter of serious concern. Too often it is the result of stress, something we all suffer from in our modern society. Moreover, it reflects a deterioration of the body’s ability to respond appropriately to changes in the environment, whether they be related to temperature, shifts in activity or emotion.

  • High “resting” blood pressure puts stress on the heart, increasing its energy requirements.
  • Increased energy output carries with it an increase in free radicals.
  • Finally, continued stress can literally burn out our adaptagenic systems, most notably our adrenal glands.

If the body does not address these factors, its natural ability to repair tissue and tune metabolism is compromised. The result is aging, a degenerative process that can lead to heart attacks, America’s #1 killer.

Medical guidelines now recommend that Doctors prescribe at least two medications to their patients with high blood pressure.

Those who advocate natural alternatives are quick to point out that medications do not cure the underlying metabolic distress. Moreover, medications always have side-effects that can compromise our vitality.

The good news is that there are a variety of things you can do to naturally maintain healthy blood pressure levels and, just as important, strong, flexible artery walls.

What are the Natural Alternatives?
